Incline Dumbbell Press
Upper-chest focused press with independent arms—great when one side lags.
Quick answer
Set the bench to ~30–45°. Press dumbbells up and slightly together, lower until elbows are about level with the torso, then drive back up without shrugging.
Incline work fills in the 'shelf' under the collarbones that flat pressing alone often misses. I prefer 30–35° for most people; steeper angles turn into more front-delt work than chest.
Dumbbells expose left-right imbalances. If one side always lags, start with that side and match the reps on the strong side—no hero reps.
Form cues
- Soft bend in elbows at the top—don't smash the bells together violently
- Lower with control until stretch is comfortable, not painful
- Keep ribs down; avoid flaring the ribcage to 'cheat' the press
Common mistakes
- Bench set too steep (60°+) so front delts take over
- Banging dumbbells together at lockout
- Excessive arch and bouncing out of the bottom
Programming notes
3–4 × 8–12. Excellent second press after flat work, or primary press for upper-chest emphasis blocks.
